The World Health Organization has identified zinc deficiency as one of the top factors contributing to disease in underdeveloped countries. Zinc is an important mineral required for countless reactions and functions in the body, including proper growth and immune function, DNA synthesis, cell division and cellular metabolism. This little supplement has forums and forums dedicated to its purported efficacy in its implementation of a better life. Zinc improves athletic performance and strength, supports both male and female reproductive health and fertility, boosts immune function in production of T cells to help ward off disease, promotes brain health and improves sleep, cognition and energy levels. Zinc comes in 3 forms and Picolinate is the most potent as evidenced here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3630857
L-Theanine is an amino acid that is not common in the diet. L-Theanine has structural similarity to Glutamine and both neurotransmitters that are produced from it (GABA and glutamate) and is known to reach the brain and act in the brain following oral ingestion. A relaxing agent without sedation, it is implicated in reducing stress and improving attention; it does not induce sleep, but it may quite weakly help with sleep.
Interestingly, the lack of sedation may have L-Theanine’s most significant supplemental role in attenuating the “edge” of stimulants. A combination of caffeine and L-Theanine is synergistic in promoting cognition and attention.
Ashwagandha is used for its calming effects. In validated models of anxiety and depression, ashwagandha has been demonstrated to be as effective as some tranquilizers and antidepressant drugs. Specifically, oral administration of ashwagandha for five days suggested anxiety-relieving effects similar to those achieved by the anti-anxiety drug lorazepam (Ativan®), and antidepressant effects similar to those of the prescription antidepressant drug imipramine (Tofranil®)
